Product Description
Copper Clad Steel (CCS) wire is a composite material in which a concentric copper cladding is metallurgically bonded to a steel core through a continuous, solid cladding process using pressure rolling for primary bonding. The copper cladding thickness remains constant surrounding the steel core. It measures 6% of the overall wire diameter for 30% conductivity wires and 10% of the overall wire diameter for 40% conductivity wires. Different steel grades for the core result in Dead Soft Annealed, High Strength, and Extra High Strength characteristics. Strand is concentrically stranded cable of one to three layers with a left-hand lay in the outer layer, unless otherwise specified. All individual wires are of the same size. The CCS wire and strand combine the strength of steel with the conductivity and corrosion resistance of copper. These properties make CCS wire and strand ideal for many utility, telecommunication, and general industry applications.
Products Highlights
1 Stronger Than Copper
The steel component of the CCS wire creates a strong conductor, which can withstand more mechanical abuse than solid copper wire. Its superior mechanical strength makes the CCS wire less likely to be damaged during installation, or from fatigue due to vibration or bending.
2 Easy Installation
The CCS wire and strand have been specially designed with a low carbon steel core to provide the maximum flexibility while maintaining high strength. A special heat treatment process results in a very malleable wire that is easy to handle and install without the need for special tools or equipment. The CCS wire and strand is also lighter than solid copper of the same size.
3 Theft Resistant
Because the copper cladding is permanently bonded to the central steel core, the CCS wire and strand have very little scrap value, discouraging theft and leaving the grounding system intact.
4 Corrosion Resistant
The CCS wire and strand exhibit the same corrosion-resistant properties as copper, while retaining the high strength of steel.

Company Profile

Application
1 Grounding Conductors for Primary Surge Arresters
Selecting Dead Soft Annealed (DSA) CCS wire as the grounding conductor for primary surge arresters allows for the installation of a continuous length of conductor from the arrester to the buried grounding electrode. This practice is not typically recommended with aluminum conductors. The steel core of the DSA CCS ground wire offers a robust path. It can endure more mechanical abuse and is less susceptible to vibration-induced fatigue than copper or aluminum wire.
When DSA CCS wire is used instead of copper, the grounding conductor is significantly less prone to theft. This characteristic is important not only from an economic perspective but also from the standpoint of safety and reliability. Often, the removal of a copper downlead is not noticeable until a surge current causes a failure in the system.
2 Connectors
Standard connectors used for copper wire can be utilized on all CCS products, including exothermic connections.
3 Pole Ground Wire
DSA CCS wire is ideally suited as a downlead on transmission or distribution lines utilizing wood, concrete, or fiberglass poles. Despite its mechanical strength, the pliability of DSA CCS wire allows the downlead to be easily formed from the connection at the overhead ground wire, along the pole, and down to the buried electrode. On metal transmission towers, short lengths of DSA CCS wire are often used to connect the tower legs to driven electrodes.
4 Substation Ground Grid Wire and Fence Grounds
CCS strand 4/0 19-wire dead soft annealed (DSA) copper-clad steel strand brings numerous advantages to the power utility industry for electrical grounding. Both mechanically rugged and flexible, CCS strand is the smarter alternative to solid copper conductors for grounding applications in generation plants, substations, switchyards, and industrial installations. As a grounding conductor, DSA CCS strand is specifically designed to replace 4/0 copper cable at an initial cost savings, while continuing to provide long-term value due to its excellent resistance to fatigue and breakage.
